Decluttering Tips for Busy Moms

Having a house full of stuff is the dream, right? We’ve all seen those shows where people go into hoarder-like conditions and you always hope that no one you know will ever be like that. But let’s face it, everyone has some sort of clutter to deal with.

Moms are especially susceptible to acquiring too much stuff. Our houses are not only our homes but they are filled with memories of Christmases past, photographs, children’s artwork and toys. We all want our children’s first memories to be of a beautiful and well-decorated home, which makes decluttering an even harder task.

But decluttering is essential if you ever hope to have a clean house again.

Decluttering can be overwhelming for anyone though so I’ve come up with ten simple tips to help you declutter your house the easy way!

Getting rid of clutter the easy way is a simple three-step process.

First, get rid of any damaged or broken items that need repair. Second, get rid of anything you don’t use daily and third, get rid of everything else!

This may seem like a no-brainer but I’m pretty sure there are some things still in your house that you haven’t used in months and if not, years.

This is the perfect time to spring clean your house and get rid of those things that don’t bring you pleasure anymore or that may even be taking up space for something new!

But what about items you don’t even realize are laying around collecting dust?

Here are five sneaky areas in most homes to double-check, before they become problems.

1.) Small appliances throughout the house

I’m not talking about your blenders or microwaves. I’m talking about the small coffee maker that most likely doesn’t get used, the sewing machine that has been sitting around collecting dust for years, and even kitchen appliances that are never grabbed

Think about it. Have you gone into your kitchen within the past year only to say “wow I haven’t used that thing in forever?”

If so, you may want to go ahead and pick it up and put it in a closet somewhere. If you haven’t gone into the kitchen yet, do it now, and check for these appliances

2.) Kitchen gadgets

This includes knives, pans, stove accessories, all of it. If you don’t cook or bake on a regular basis, it’s time to clean out the small appliances in your kitchen

Not only do they need cleaning, but if you use them less than once a week, you probably aren’t going to use them again any time soon.

3.) Linen closets and cabinets

Read each label on each towel, sheet and washcloth and find out the last time you even used them. Do they have any stains or discolourations? If so, you might want to consider replacing them ASAP. This is especially true if anyone in the house has allergies. Just because a towel isn’t aesthetically displeasing, doesn’t mean it’s not unusable.

4.) Clothing closets

Don’t forget to check your clothing closets too. Are you holding onto anything that is either never worn or hasn’t been worn in over a year? Again, if it has any stains or discolourations, get rid of it ASAP. If you haven’t worn an article of clothing for ONE YEAR, you probably aren’t going to wear it again and it’s taking up space in your closet (and in your life).

5.) Toss or donate?

If you don’t recognize what is laying around the house, I would suggest either getting rid of it or donating it. You never know who could need it.

Everyone’s lives are busy. No one is perfect though so don’t be hard on yourself if you find that you have too much stuff!

Decluttering is easy. Get rid of damaged items, the things you don’t use daily and everything else! Do this and I guarantee your life will be less cluttered.
