The children of Melissa and Mark Hortman, the Minnesota couple who were shot and killed on Saturday, June 14, have released a public statement mourning their loss and thanking the public for their support.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the killings as a “politically motivated assassination.” A two-day manhunt ended with the arrest of suspect Vance Boelter, who now faces state and federal charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and stalking.
In a statement shared on Monday, June 16, Sophie and Colin Hortman said they are “devastated and heartbroken” by the deaths of their parents.
“They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can’t believe they are gone,” the siblings said. “Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much.”
The statement also confirmed that Sophie and Colin are safe and surrounded by loved ones. They expressed deep gratitude for the public’s support and asked for privacy as they grieve.
They also thanked law enforcement for the quick response and efforts to apprehend the suspect, adding, “We especially would like to thank the officers who were first on the scene and their heroic attempts to rescue our mom and dad.”
Paying tribute to their parents’ legacy, Sophie and Colin wrote that Mark and Melissa Hortman were deeply committed to their community and touched many lives.
To honor their memory, the siblings encouraged people to take simple actions like planting a tree, enjoying a local park, petting a dog, baking, or telling a cheesy dad joke. They also urged the public to “stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.”
They ended with a call for unity and kindness: “Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. The best way to honor our parents’ memory is to do something—big or small—that makes life better for someone else.”
