Chappell Roan, the talented singer behind the hit song “Good Luck, Babe!”, made history by winning her first VMA for Best New Artist at the 2024 MTV VMAs held at the UBS Arena in New York on September 11.
The 26-year-old pop sensation, whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz, accepted the award in a striking chainlink dress and headpiece, reading her heartfelt speech directly from her diary.
Roan expressed gratitude to MTV, her team, family, and friends before dedicating her win to the queer and trans community, acknowledging the inspiration she draws from drag queens and the impact of her music on the LGBTQ+ community.
She added: “And thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and my fears. Thank you. For all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now: I see you. I understand you because I’m one of you, and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you want to be.”
Following the release of her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” in September 2023, she captivated audiences on the summer festival circuit and catapulted to fame.
Her music has resonated widely, with an impressive seven songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100: “Pink Pony Club,” “My Kink Is Karma,” “Femininomenon,” “Casual,” “Red Wine Supernova,” “Hot to Go!,” and “Good Luck, Babe!” A key factor in her appeal is her electrifying live performances, which are a masterclass in campy fun, complete with dress codes and themes like “slumber party kissin’,” “goth grunge and glitter,” and “so you wanna be a pop star.”
Roan also performed at the 2024 VMAs with her performance and got nominations for Push Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Song of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”, and Best Trending Video for “Hot to Go!”
The 2024 MTV VMAs aired live from the UBS Arena in New York on September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
