Jenn Tran’s journey on The Bachelorette took an unexpected turn on the season 21 finale on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
After proposing to Devin Strader in Hawai’i, their engagement ended abruptly once they returned home.
Devin, 28, suddenly withdrew his declarations of love, leaving Jenn, 26, heartbroken.
In a stunning revelation during After the Final Rose, Jenn shared: “He went from making bold proclamations of love to denying ever being in love the next day.”All the promises he had made to me, all of the love that he had wanted to give to me wasn’t there anymore.”
Here’s what we know about Jenn and Devin’s engagement and distractous way it ended.
What Happened Between Devin and Jenn?
Jenn’s voice trembled as she recalled the painful aftermath of her proposal to Devin.
“It’s been a really tough couple of months,” she admitted. The happiest day of her life soon turned sour as Devin began to pull away after their Hawaiian engagement.
Two months later, he abruptly ended their engagement over the phone, claiming he no longer loved her and had regretted proposing from the start.
Jenn struggled to comprehend how Devin’s fervent declarations of love transformed into denial.
She initially tried to empathize, thinking his change of heart might be due to post-show adjustment struggles. “We can just date,” she offered, willing to forgo the engagement for a chance at a life together.
However, Devin had already checked out, unwilling to fight for their relationship.
According to Jenn, they last spoke in July and he has been “avoidant” ever since.
Finally together again, Jenn confronted Devin on various accounts.
For one, she saw Devin follow Maria Georgas, who turned down the role of “Bachelorette” before Jenn was named, on Instagram.
“I can’t excuse the Instagram follow. I know how much that hurt you,” he said. “I’m not here to tell you you can’t feel the way you feel. Obviously, I failed you. There’s nothing I can say other than that. Everything I felt for you was real.”
Jesse intervened to ask Devin “what happened” to make their relationship different.
“When we left the show I had a lot of doubts and regretfully and sadly I suppressed those feelings. One thing you can say here is that I have been honest with you,” she says.
Jenn and Devin Watch Their Proposal
When Jesse asks Jenn, visibly distraught, if it’s time to reveal her engagement.
Jenn’s tearful response, ‘Do I have a choice?’
As the studio audience watches the proposal footage, ABC simultaneously broadcasts live footage of Jenn crying in a small on-screen box. The network eventually removes the inset, allowing viewers to focus on the pre-recorded proposal moment, but the contrast between Jenn’s past happiness and current outlook is striking.
After a heated exchange and numerous tears, the long-awaited proposal finally arrived, but it was cringe-worthy to watch.
Devin expressed his love, saying, “Jenn, I love you with all my heart, and I never want this feeling to fade.”
Jenn responded, “I love you deeply, Devin, but I can’t let you propose. I’ve chosen myself and my best version is with you. I want to fight for you daily and wake up choosing you for the rest of my life.”
In a surprising twist, Jenn proposed to Devin with a wedding band in a seashell, to which he eagerly agreed.
However, in an awkward turn of events, Devin then proposed again, asking Jenn to marry him, and they shared a passionate kiss.
Back in the studio, Jesse reminded Jenn how happy she felt in that moment.
“I did make a lot of promises and at the time I fully believed them,” Devin admitted, and called the split “one-sided.”
“That man loved you,” he added. “I understand that I couldn’t keep promises that I made to you.”
“I hope that you learn that the weight of your words matter,” she said.
Jesse then concluded that he knows Jenn will find the great love she’s looking for.
Bachelor Nation Reacts To Jenn ‘s Dramatic Season Ending
Sam McKinney, a former contestant on The Bachelorette, is speaking out after Devin and Jenn’s engagement ended in a shocking twist.
Sam, who faced backlash for calling out Devin’s behavior during the season, shared his thoughts on Instagram Stories.
He reposted a message reading, “When the worst person you know was actually right,” accompanied by a photo of himself, and laughed, saying, “Hahahah okay this is funny.”
Sam then shared a video of himself watching the intense confrontation between Devin and Jenn on TV, looking invested in the drama.
He also reposted a message praising him for “keeping the main thing the main thing” and captioned it “Forever,” seemingly vindicated by the outcome.
Thomas N., who also came under fire for arguing with Devin, posted a photo of Devin to his Instagram Stories and wrote, “Damn. Should’ve kept the main thing the main thing,” referencing Sam M.’s catchphrase all season.
He also posted a clip of himself sipping tea and looking into the camera silently.
Jenn Broke Up With Marcus
As the finale began, Jenn confessed her love for both Devin and Marcus, but sought clarity on her decision by introducing them to her family in Hawaii.
However, the family meetings only heightened her concerns. Jenn’s mother expressed reservations about Devin, suggesting she needed more time to assess their relationship.
Her brother, James, worried that Jenn was repeating a pattern of pursuing emotionally unavailable partners.
James felt Marcus wasn’t fully invested in his feelings, and Jenn’s mother shared the same sentiment, stating, “He’s not ready yet.”
Although Jenn’s date with Devin concluded on a positive note, her time with Marcus was marked by struggle.
Despite Marcus’ declaration of love, their connection remained strained.
The following day, Marcus tearfully admitted he couldn’t meet Jenn’s expectations, saying, “I’m not giving you what you need.”
Jenn declared she was “done” – not just with Marcus, but also with the pattern of attracting emotionally unavailable partners.
She acknowledged a turning point, saying, “I’m finally letting go of the part of me I’ve held onto for so long.”
Jenn realized she desired a relationship where both parties gave equally, rather than constantly chasing someone who couldn’t reciprocate her emotions.
