NBA and FIBA Collaborate to Bring BWB Africa Camp to East Africa

NBA and FIBA are collaborating to bring their Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa camp to East Africa for the first time. From August 23 to 26, Kigali, Rwanda will host 60 talented young basketball players aged 18 and under at this prestigious event.

The BWB camp provides a platform for young African players to hone their skills under the guidance of current and former NBA, WNBA, and FIBA players and coaches. In addition to basketball training, the camp focuses on life skills, leadership development, and social responsibility.

CEO of NBA Africa, Clare Akamanzi, expressed her enthusiasm for hosting the camp in East Africa, highlighting the opportunity it provides for young players to develop and excel in the sport. Rwanda’s growing presence in African basketball, evidenced by hosting major events like the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and the Basketball Africa League playoffs, further solidifies the country’s role in the region’s basketball landscape.

Nike, a global partner of BWB, will be providing the campers with the latest apparel and footwear, enhancing the overall experience. Since its inception in 2001, the BWB programme has impacted over 4,600 participants from 144 countries, with 142 former campers making it to the NBA and WNBA through the draft or as free agents.

Notable African players like Joel Embiid, Pascal Siakam, and Khaman Maluach, who have emerged from the BWB programme, serve as inspiring examples for the young talent participating in the camp. This initiative underscores the significance of nurturing basketball talent in Africa and the potential for growth and success in the sport.

The announcement of the 2025 BWB Africa camp in Kigali signifies a step forward in the development of basketball in East Africa, showcasing the region’s growing influence in the basketball world.
