What Happened in the Cash App Lawsuit?
The class action lawsuit filed in February claims Cash App “failed to implement appropriate controls to prevent unauthorized access” to both Cash App and Cash App Investing accounts. The suit alleges that Cash App “mishandled and failed to adequately resolve customer complaints regarding unauthorized or fraudulent transactions.”
The lawsuit claims two specific security breaches led to unauthorized access to customer information:
- December 2021 Data Breach: This breach reportedly resulted in the public release of personal information affecting 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers.
- Access via Recycled Phone Numbers in 2023: An unauthorized user allegedly gained access to certain Cash App accounts through recycled phone numbers linked to those accounts.
In addition to agreeing to pay $15 million as part of the settlement, Cash App has committed to enhancing its data security. However, the company denies any liability or wrongdoing.
