Girls Aloud is set to release a new edition of their popular ballad, “I’ll Stand By You,” this time with an emotional tribute that features the full lead vocal of their late band member, Sarah Harding.
Originally released in 2004 for the BBC Children In Need charity, the song resonated with audiences and held the top spot on the UK music charts for two consecutive weeks. This new 20th-anniversary release is once again aimed at raising funds for the Children In Need appeal, continuing the band’s long-standing support for the charity.
The discovery of Harding’s isolated vocal for the track came as Girls Aloud were reviewing archival material for their recent, highly successful arena tour. During the tour, “I’ll Stand By You” became a poignant highlight, with footage of Harding singing projected on stage as her bandmates—Nadine Coyle, Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh—joined in, creating a moving tribute for fans. As the song progressed, the four band members gathered closely on stage, delivering the final chorus a cappella, harmonizing with Harding’s voice as a gesture of their shared bond and friendship.
The reimagined single, known as “I’ll Stand By You – Sarah’s Version,” debuted on Wednesday morning and will officially launch during the Children In Need appeal on November 15, accompanied by a fresh music video that features previously unseen footage of Harding. This release not only commemorates Harding’s legacy but also celebrates the band’s charitable efforts and enduring connection with Children In Need.
Adding to the celebrations, ITV plans to air highlights from Girls Aloud’s recent tour on November 17, which would have marked Harding’s 43rd birthday. Fans can catch the full concert on the ITVX streaming service, allowing a deeper look into this special tour that brought the Girls Aloud family together in a touching homage to their late friend and bandmate.
“I’ll Stand By You,” originally penned by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders in 1994, finds new meaning with Harding’s voice at the forefront, underscoring the song’s themes of resilience, friendship, and solidarity. Children In Need, the BBC’s charitable organization dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK, will benefit from the proceeds of this heartfelt release.
