TikTok Removes Over 2 Million Videos in Nigeria for Violating Standards

TikTok has made significant strides in improving content moderation on its platform in Nigeria, removing over 2.1 million videos that violated community standards in the second quarter of 2024.

As part of its efforts to create a safer online environment, TikTok achieved a proactive removal rate of 99.1%, with 90.7% of flagged content deleted within 24 hours of posting.

This proactive approach highlights TikTok’s commitment to curbing harmful content before it impacts users. Notably, the removed videos represented less than 1% of all uploads in Nigeria during this period.

Globally, TikTok removed more than 178 million videos in June 2024 alone, with 144 million deletions attributed to automated detection technologies.

The global proactive detection rate now stands at an impressive 98.2%, underscoring TikTok’s enhanced capabilities in swiftly identifying and removing content that violates its guidelines.

In other regulatory news, Telegram Messenger recently received a fine of $41,400 from a Moscow court for its refusal to delete content banned in Russia. This marks the second penalty for Telegram over similar infractions, emphasising the importance of aligning with local content regulations.
