Why Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck actually broke up?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s relationship has captivated fans over the years, going from a passionate start to an emotional reunion and, now, to a bittersweet end.

After meeting and starting to date in 2002, the couple—nicknamed “Bennifer”—became engaged before calling it off in 2004. Affleck later shared that the intense media scrutiny surrounding them had put immense strain on their relationship, stating that it contributed to “about 50 per cent” of their issues. Reflecting on the media’s influence, he recalled feeling “hurt and angry” as the couple faced relentless public speculation.

Despite this, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance nearly 20 years later, in 2022, and their fans welcomed the reunion as a long-awaited second chance.

In a 2021 interview with WSJ Magazine, Affleck spoke to the value of second chances in life, expressing his gratitude: “I am very lucky in my life in that I have benefited from second chances.”

Unfortunately, their second chance wasn’t lasting. On August 21, 2024, exactly one year after their wedding, Lopez filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Reflecting on this, Lopez revealed to Interview Magazine how life’s lessons can be hard-won.

“There’s times when I thought I figured it out and then life goes, ‘Let’s send you another thing’,” she shared, explaining how she’s been examining her past decisions and the mistakes she hopes to avoid in the future.

She described her approach as “examining it little by little,” owning her part in the relationship’s breakdown, and trying to learn from it for a healthier future.
