Who Are Mariah Carey’s Siblings? Meet Alison, Morgan Carey

Mariah Carey typically keeps her bond with her siblings private, but she’s the youngest of three.

The renowned singer, born in 1969 to Patricia and Alfred Carey, has an older brother, Morgan Carey, born in 1960, and an older sister, the late Alison Carey, born in 1963.

Over the years, Mariah has navigated complex relationships with her siblings.

The news of Alison and their mother passing away on the same day in August 2024 left Mariah feeling “heartbroken.”

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Mariah wrote in a statement to People on Aug. 26. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The Grammy winner didn’t share the reasons for their deaths but mentioned spending time with her mom before she passed at 87.

However, Mariah apparently didn’t visit or contact her distant sister even though she was in hospice care.

Mariah and her brother are now the sole surviving members of their immediate family after their father passed away in July 2002 from cancer at the age of 72.

Alison Carey

Alison, Morgan, and Mariah grew up in Long Island, NY, until their parents split in 1973 when the “Fantasy” singer was 3 years old.

The pop icon and her siblings were then separated, with Mariah living with her mother while Alison and Morgan moved in with their dad.

Alison was around 14 years old when she gave birth to her first son, Shawn, in 1977. She welcomed her second son, Michael, in 1987.

In September 2020, Mariah opened up about the disconnect between herself and her siblings after releasing her 2020 tell-all memoir about her traumatic childhood, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

“We don’t even really know each other,” she told Oprah Winfrey during an Apple TV+ episode of “The Oprah Conversation.” “We didn’t grow up together … they were on their journeys.”

The “Obsessed” singer described her sister in the book as “deeply wounded” but “the most brilliant and broken person [she has] ever known,” per the US Sun.

Mariah explained Alison saw “things a child should never see,” which “damaged and derailed her girlhood.”

Morgan Carey

Morgan developed careers as a music producer, celebrity fitness trainer, and fitness model.

“He was strikingly handsome and occasionally worked as a model,” Mariah detailed in her book. “He was well-known and well-liked.”

Mariah shared that her older brother supported her by providing $5,000 to release her self-titled debut album in 1990, which she later repaid.

Their relationship turned sour in 1994 following a major argument, as reported by the Daily Mail. The discord escalated when Mariah alleged her brother’s violent behaviour in her memoir.

Mariah claimed that Morgan once “slammed” their mom, Patricia “, so hard” into a wall, creating a noise similar to a gunshot.

“Next thing I knew, she was totally limp, as if her bones had melted, folding onto the floor,” she detailed in her book.

“It was a split second. It was an eternity. My eyes were still fixed in place, only now I was looking at my mother collapsed in a crumpled pile on the floor.”

The producer also reportedly had an altercation with his father, leading to about a dozen law enforcement officers intervening.

Mariah also accused her brother of being involved in drug dealing during his time working at bars in New York City in the 1980s.

“He discreetly supplied the beautiful people with their powdered party favours. He was diabolically charismatic,” she penned in her book.

In 2021, Morgan took legal action against Mariah, claiming the passages about him were “false and defamatory,” harming his reputation and personal affairs.

Morgan was living in Italy with his wife, Ilaria Negrini Carey, at the time. He stated that he lost a significant film deal due to the revelations in Mariah’s memoir.

Morgan refuted claims of violence, asserting that their father was the abuser.

He criticized Mariah for not highlighting his journey of overcoming cerebral palsy and grand mal epilepsy, portraying him negatively instead.
