9-Year-Old Girl Killed in New Orleans Shooting While Protecting Siblings

New Orleans, LA – A 9-year-old girl, Lee’Lani Brooks, was tragically shot and killed on May 12 while attempting to shield her younger siblings from gunfire erupting near her home.

Lee’Lani was playing outside when a shootout began between men nearby. She and her mother ran inside, but a stray bullet pierced through a window, striking Lee’Lani in the head as she rushed to get her younger siblings to safety.

She was immediately taken to a hospital, where she was placed on life support and declared brain dead.

On May 16, her family made the difficult decision to take her off life support, and she passed away shortly after.

New Orleans Police have arrested 19-year-old Evan Rogers in connection with the shooting. As of May 13, he faced charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons.

Rogers was apprehended after a four-hour standoff with U.S. Marshals at a hotel where he was allegedly hiding.

Police have also arrested a second individual, though their name and charges have not been released.

Lee’Lani’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses. Her mother, Letisha Johnson, described her daughter as “a sweet, vibrant, and fun 9-year-old child who loved and was loved by everyone around her.
