6 Reasons Why You Should Think Before You Speak

As a child, it’s often said that we should “think before we speak.” And for the most part, this is great advice. Unfortunately, nobody ever seems to heed this advice as an adult—which can be problematic considering how powerful our words are. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you should think before you speak.

1. Our words reflect our thoughts

Our thoughts are a reflection of how we feel and what we believe in, and when we speak, it’s natural for these feelings and beliefs to come out. This is one reason why if you constantly find yourself saying things like, “I don’t know,” “I wish I was more confident,” or “Life sucks,” this reflects what you are thinking about most of the time. This makes sense because there is a clear connection between what we think and how we feel.

2. Words can hurt or heal us

There are certain words that have the power to change the way people feel about themselves. We call these magic words “bombs.” For example, if someone tells a child they’re stupid, it could stay with them for their entire life. The problem is that our words are reflections of who we are. Our words represent what lies within our hearts. If we’re lazy, our words will reflect that. If we’re thoughtful and compassionate though, then that’s what people will see.

3. Our words affect how others perceive us

Our words are not often an accident—they are a reflection of how much effort we put into something. If someone speaks poorly or with ignorance, it shows because the words they use reflect a lack of refinement and care.

4. Words affect our self-image

You will never get the results you desire if your words contradict your actions. People will see right through you—and it won’t be pretty. You have to put yourself in a position where people can only believe one thing about you. Once your words and actions show that you’re lazy, it’s nearly impossible to convince someone that you’re not (unless, of course, you change).

5. Our words impact others around us

Your children are listening—give them something positive to grow on. The same is true for the people who look up to you, whether they’re children or adults. You have a responsibility to be a positive role model for those around you—and that means not saying hurtful things toward others, but instead speaking kindly and encouragingly

6. We can’t take back our words

You may try to cover up your insult with a compliment, but if the person you’re speaking to knows that you just said something mean, then it doesn’t really matter what else you say. You can’t take back your words once they’ve been spoken, nor can you justify them after the fact.

Before you speak, think about what exactly you want to say. Does it have a positive impact on the people around you? Is it going to hurt someone? If so, then reconsider what you’re going to say—because once these words come out of your mouth, they’re here to stay.
