During a recent guest appearance on Jay Mohr’s podcast, guitarist and singer Billy Gibbons finally addressed these speculations. According to Gibbons, Gillette offered each member $1 million to shave their iconic beards for a television commercial. At the time, both Gibbons and the late bassist Dusty Hill sported their signature facial hair, while drummer Frank Beard famously did not have a beard.
After considering the offer, ZZ Top sought advice from legendary rock publicist Bob Merlis. Despite the tempting amount of money involved, Merlis jokingly warned the band that shaving off their beards could backfire, as they might not even recognize themselves without their distinctive look.
