ZZ Top: Rock Legends and Timeless Hits

ZZ Top rose to fame in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, captivating audiences with their dynamic stage presence, gritty blues-rock sound, and playful lyrics. Among their many hits, one song in particular has stood the test of time and is now considered one of the best mainstream rock songs ever.

In their extensive career, ZZ Top has released an array of notable music, including the track “Stages” in 1985. This song, featured on their ninth studio album, Afterburner, showcased a departure from their usual blues-rock style, incorporating a more upbeat, pop-influenced sound.

Nearly four decades later, “Stages” still holds a significant place in music history, ranking at No. 62 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Songs” list. Other notable tracks on the list include hits by Days of the New, Stone Temple Pilots, and U2.

While “Stages” may not have won major awards, the song achieved global success, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for two weeks in 1986. It also peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying its status as one of ZZ Top’s most successful hits at the time.

With its international appeal, “Stages” made an impact on the UK charts as well, reaching No. 43 on the Official Singles Chart and remaining on the rankings for four weeks in early 1986.

Despite the passing of founding member Dusty Hill in 2021, ZZ Top continues to thrive in the rock music scene. The band, now featuring longtime guitar technician Elwood Francis on bass, is set to embark on their The Big One 2026 tour in North America and Europe, marking their return to the European stage after two years.

Through their timeless hits, ZZ Top remains a powerhouse in the music industry, captivating audiences with their unique sound and unforgettable performances. So as the legendary band gears up for their upcoming tour, their legacy continues to shine brightly, proving that their music is as timeless as ever.
