Zakk Wylde, known for his guitar skills, recently shared a story about the first time he encountered Black Sabbath music, specifically Tony Iommi’s legendary guitar riffs. In a documentary honoring Iommi as the Godfather of Heavy Metal, Wylde described feeling “terrified” upon listening to a Black Sabbath album for the very first time.
Reflecting on that moment, Wylde, now 58 years old, recounted a memory from his youth when he went to a mall with his mom, who allowed him to pick out a record. “I remember going to the mall with my mom, and she was like, ‘Oh you can get a record,’ right?’” he shared. “I got We Sold Our Soul for Rock ‘n’ Roll. So I end up putting this thing on, and I was just beyond terrified.”
We Sold Our Soul for Rock ‘n’ Roll, a compilation album by Black Sabbath released in 1976, features some of the band’s most iconic early tracks. Songs like “The Wizard,” “War Pigs,” and “Iron Man” showcased the band’s unique sound that left a lasting impact on the music world.
Wylde’s connection to Black Sabbath continued into the late 1980s when he joined lead singer Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band and formed a tribute group called Zakk Sabbath. Ultimately, he had the opportunity to share the stage with Osbourne at Black Sabbath’s farewell show in July 2025, shortly before Osbourne’s passing.
Throughout his career, Wylde has humorously touched on the themes of Sabbath and Satanism. In a recent interview, he discussed how he balanced his Irish Catholic upbringing with his work alongside the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne. Wylde’s ability to blend his heritage with his rock and roll lifestyle has been a recurring theme in his career.
As a prominent figure in the rock world, Wylde’s journey from a young music fan to a seasoned musician is a testament to his passion for the craft. His unique perspective on heavy metal music, combined with his comedic approach, sets him apart in the industry.
