Women Are Protesting The Rape and Murder of a 13-year-old Girl in Somalia’s Puntland Region

Women and children in Somalia’s semi autonomous region of Puntland have taken to the streets to protest and vent their anger following the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl.

This comes after five men were sentenced to death by firing squad for another incident which took place in Galkayo, one of the main cities in Puntland.

A protesting woman tells BBC,

“We have nowhere to go. We are afraid of our boys. We are afraid of the men that should protect us. We are oppressed 24 hours a day. We don’t have a life.”

Another woman says,

“Today, we don’t believe that men who abuse women will be brought to justice. It will be left to customary laws and elders. But today, we want this crime to be handled in line with the Sharia and get us justice.”
