A man from Minnesota has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2022 murder of a co-worker who had rejected his advances.
Michael Jordan Carpenter, aged 38, was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree intentional murder for killing Nicole Hammond after a dispute over his unwanted advances.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison in a news release announced Carpenter’s life sentence without parole last week.
“Carpenter approached Hammond before her work shift in the parking lot of Dubow Textile, armed with a 9mm pistol, and fired a single shot through Hammond’s neck,” the attorney general said.
“My thoughts are with Nicole Hammond’s friends, family, and community today. Nicole was a talented, kind, and caring soul who loved art and nature. She will be missed by many.
“I am pleased that today, the Court held Michael Carpenter fully accountable for the crime he committed. I hope this accountability is eventually able to bring some measure of peace to Nicole’s loved ones.”
Carpenter was taken into custody less than three hours after the tragic incident where he killed Hammond.
According to police statements, text messages on Hammond’s phone revealed an argument the night before the incident, during which she clearly expressed her discomfort with Carpenter’s actions.
Reports reveal that several coworkers were aware of Carpenter’s persistent harassment of Hammond, who was 28 at the time of her death.
