Pink Floyd’s iconic album “Wish You Were Here” has made a triumphant return to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart 50 years after its original release. The special 50th-anniversary edition has not only secured the No. 1 spot but has also broken The Beatles’ record for the longest gap between chart-topping albums.
The deluxe edition, titled “Wish You Were Here 50,” offers fans a range of formats to choose from and includes a Dolby Atmos mix as well as 25 bonus tracks. Among these bonus tracks are rare demos and alternate versions of beloved classics like “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” and the album’s title track.
This recent achievement marks Pink Floyd’s second No. 1 album of 2025. Earlier in the year, the live recording “Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII” from a 1971 performance also reached the top of the chart. While the band had never before held a Christmas No. 1 album, they did claim the top spot on the singles chart in 1979 with “Another Brick in the Wall.”
David Gilmour, the band’s guitarist, took to Instagram to share his excitement about the album’s success, raising a glass in celebration of “Wish You Were Here” becoming the UK’s Christmas Number 1 album.
With this impressive return to No. 1 after five decades, “Wish You Were Here” has set a new record for the longest gap between chart-topping albums on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. The previous record-holder, The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” took nearly 50 years between its No. 1 appearances in 1969 and 2019.
Pink Floyd’s impact goes beyond just “Wish You Were Here.” Their legendary 1973 album “The Dark Side of the Moon,” featuring hits like “Money” and “The Great Gig in the Sky,” spent an astounding 989 weeks on the Billboard 200 this past June. With over 45 million copies sold worldwide, it remains one of the highest-selling albums of all time, surpassing classics like The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and Michael Jackson’s “Bad.”
In the ever-evolving landscape of music, Pink Floyd’s enduring legacy continues to captivate audiences and redefine the boundaries of rock music.
