In September 2015, the musical drama Spring Awakening debuted on Broadway. It received rave reviews and thrust actress, Ali Stroker, into the spotlight.

Why is Ali Stroker in a wheelchair?

At the age of two, Ali Stroker was injured in a vehicle accident and became paralyzed from the chest down. She’s been confined to a wheelchair since then.

She claims that she has always desired to perform on Broadway, but assumed it would be difficult for her because of her disability. When she found out that the show she was auditioning for, Spring Awakening, would include people with disabilities, she took her chance and went for it.

The Parade article, which came out in 2016, the year Stroker debuted as the first wheelchair user on Broadway – said Ali’s life took a “radical turn” that summer when she was seven.

She was filming a backyard version of Annie while her next-door neighbour was in charge of the production. Stroker was cast as the title character.

“Once I started performing I was someone else. I could be an actress and singer and not just a girl in a wheelchair.”

Personal life

Ali Stroker and her husband David Perlow are going to have a baby. Ali revealed the news over the weekend. “The newest member of the team is arriving in November!” she announced on Instagram Saturday. “A dream come true!!”
