Who takes over ‘American Idol’ Judge’s Seat After Katy Perry Departure?

It’s exciting news for fans of American Idol! The latest addition to the judging panel is a familiar face from the show’s history.

Carrie Underwood, the winner of the fourth season in 2005, is all set to join as a judge for the upcoming 23rd season early next year, stepping into Katy Perry’s former role. The returning judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will be joined by host Ryan Seacrest once again.

Underwood’s comeback to Idol was officially revealed on Good Morning America last Thursday.

“This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on Idol and launched her successful, multi-Grammy Award-winning career. As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television,” said Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich in a statement.

“This is a full-circle moment both for the show and audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home, Carrie.”

Underwood is undeniably one of the most successful Idol winners ever, with an impressive track record post-Idol.

She has won eight Grammy Awards and a total of 25 Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association awards. Additionally, she has seen eight albums, including a greatest hits compilation, soar to the top of the U.S. country charts, with four of them hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

“Carrie Underwood is the first American Idol alum ever to join the judging panel. Her global superstar status as the most successful Idol winner to date makes her a perfect fit for the show,” said executive producer and showrunner Megan Wolflick.

“She embodies the true spirit of Idol as she herself is the definition of the Cinderella story. Our future hopefuls will have the chance to receive advice from someone who has walked in their exact footsteps every step of the way. Carrie has always been a strong supporter of Idol, and I’m thrilled for her to be reunited with our Idol family.”

Perry revealed in February that season 22 would be her final stint as a judge on American Idol as she aimed to refocus on her music. The trio of Perry, Richie, and Bryan has been the consistent judging panel throughout the show’s seven-season ABC revival, which commenced in 2018 after Fox’s initial 15-season run.

The 23rd season of American Idol is scheduled to kick off in early 2025, with live, virtual auditions commencing on August 12th.
