In July 2024, Usha Vance, 38, gained national attention when her husband, Senator JD Vance, was named as the Republican vice-presidential nominee alongside Donald Trump. Since then, she’s been a steady presence on the campaign trail with her husband and their three children, often seen with a book in hand as they make their way across the country.
A Yale-educated former lawyer, Usha has taken an active role in the campaign, providing her insights on JD’s appearances and helping him prepare for the October vice-presidential debate.
Born in San Diego in 1986 to Indian immigrant parents, Usha Chilukuri excelled academically from a young age. After high school in Rancho Peñasquitos, she attended Yale University, pursued a teaching fellowship in China, and later earned a master’s degree at Cambridge as a Gates Scholar. She and JD met at Yale Law School in 2010, and they married four years later.
In her legal career, Usha clerked for notable figures, including then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts. She later joined the prominent law firm Munger Tolles & Olsen before stepping down in July 2024 to join her husband on the campaign trail.
Usha has faced some racist attacks since becoming more visible in the public eye, which her husband has openly condemned. The Vances, who have two sons, Ewan and Vivek, and a daughter, Mirabel, currently live in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they relocated in 2018 after time spent in California and Washington, D.C.
