For the second time in eight years, a woman has secured the Democratic nomination for US president, yet fell short in a campaign where gender played a pivotal role.
There is still hope, as Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester will make history as the first Black woman to represent Delaware in the Senate after defeating Republican Eric Hansen and independent candidate Mike Katz.

Who is Blunt Rochester?
Blunt Rochester is a 62-year-old American politician who has been serving as the U.S. representative for Delaware’s congressional district since 2017.
She started her political career working for Tom Carper, first in the House of Representatives and later when he became governor of Delaware.
Additionally, she served as the CEO of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League.
Rochester shared that the death of her husband motivated her to run for office in 2016, which she successfully did.
In 2023, she announced her candidacy for the United States Senate in the 2024 election to succeed the retiring Carper, who endorsed her in the race.
Rochester won the Democratic primary without opposition and went on to defeat Republican nominee Eric Hansen in the general election.
Currently serving her fourth term in the House, Blunt Rochester has already made history as the first woman and the first Black person to represent Delaware in Congress.
Similarly, Laphonza Butler of California is the only Black woman in the Senate and the third in history, having been appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last year to fill the seat of the late Dianne Feinstein; Butler chose not to run for election.
In her election night speech, Blunt Rochester acknowledged the Black women who paved the way for her in the Senate.
“As I prepare to step foot on that trail blazed by the three strong Black women senators who came before us — Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Senator Laphonza Butler — I have a message to the young people who are standing up, speaking up, and giving your all for our country and the world,” she stated. “I see you, I’m grateful for you and you’ve got next.”

Blunt Rochester, shared with NBC News before Election Day that her focus is on job creation, protecting reproductive rights, enhancing health care, and addressing the needs of seniors and families.
She also emphasized that her candidacy goes beyond breaking barriers. “I’m not doing this to make history,” she told NBC News. “I’m doing this to make a difference.”
