Meghan Markle showed her support for Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential election.
Following her departure from the royal family and return to the US in 2020, the Duchess of Sussex, Markle, had a conversation with Gloria Steinem about women in politics. They specifically discussed Harris, who was running for vice president alongside Joe Biden during that period.
“The heart of the Democratic Party has been Black women,” Steinem, 90, said. “And now there is a potential vice president who is Black, and that’s exciting.”
The 42-year-old “Suits” alum replied that she was “excited” to see Harris—who is of Jamaican and Indian descent—included on the ballot.
“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,” Markle said.
“You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity,” she added.
“As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see. And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we’re starting to break through in a different way.”
Harris, aged 59, has also voiced her support for Markle previously.
Back in 2019, she retweeted a video where the mom of two candidly shared the impact of media scrutiny on her mental well-being during her first pregnancy with Archie.
“This is really important. It’s a display of strength to express emotions,” the former prosecutor remarked. “Meghan, we stand by you.”
Additionally, in June 2020, Harris shared Markle’s virtual speech to her high school’s graduating class, where she addressed the deaths of numerous Black Americans by the police.
Harris wrote, “‘The only wrong thing to say is to say nothing.’ Thank you, Meghan, for this powerful statement.”
With the anticipation of Harris facing off against Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, numerous celebrities, including Ariana Grande, George Clooney, and Beyoncé, have endorsed her.
As of now, Markle has not made a public endorsement of Harris for the presidency.
