What happened to Simona Halep at the WTA Washington Open?

Tennis fans have been curious as to what caused Simona Halep to retire from the 2022 Washington Open.

The 2022 Washington Open (also known as the Citi Open) took place in Washington, DC. The event ran from August 1 through August 7 at the William H. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, DC.

Simona Halep was said to have retired from the match owing to illness and exhibited all the signs of being unwell. From the start of the game, there were indications that something was wrong, as she looked uncomfortable throughout.

Some spectators believe that the extremely hot and humid weather on the court might have played a role. In her Round of 16 encounters against top-seed and defending champion Jessica Pegula, Daria Saville toppled the reigning champion. She acknowledged the tough circumstances afterwards saying that it was really tough and that the conditions were brutal.

This isn’t the first time that Halep has visibly struggled during a match. After she was defeated by Zheng Qinwen in the 2022 French Open, Simona revealed that she had suffered from a panic attack while playing.

When she was overcome with fear during the match, she called for medical assistance and requested to leave the court.

Anna Kalinskaya will play Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Washington Open.
