Vince Gill Reflects on the Unexpected Success of His Hit Song, “When I Call Your Name”
The year was 1990, and country music sensation Vince Gill was about to release a single that would change his career forever. In a recent conversation with fellow musician Charlie Worsham, Gill looked back on the making of “When I Call Your Name,” a song he co-wrote with Tim DuBois.
As they sat down to write the song, there was no grand plan or expectation that it would become a hit. “Nobody was sitting there going, ‘This is the one!'” Gill recalled. It was simply a waltz they decided to try out.

It started, and I remember [his business manager] Chuck Flood called and he said, ‘This one’s on fire,'” Gill shared. The song not only reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart but also earned Gill the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Single of the Year at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards.
Reflecting on the success of the song, Gill marveled at how quickly it resonated with audiences. “It was awesome to watch,” he said. “All the stations were getting behind it and people were responding to it.”
During the conversation, Gill also touched on the collaborative process of songwriting and how he and DuBois, both from Oklahoma, came together to create something special. “You never know,” Gill mused, “when you hook up with somebody and say, ‘Hey let’s write a song.'”
