As “Stranger Things” approaches its final episodes, fans are immersing themselves in every detail about the show, including the real-life inspiration behind the hit Netflix series.
Business Insider revealed that the town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the series was inspired by an abandoned government Air Force station in Montauk, New York, where experiments were allegedly conducted on people during the ’70s and ’80s.
According to The Stranger Things Bible, the show’s creators drew inspiration from the events at the Montauk facility. In Season 1, viewers witnessed children being used for scientific experiments and the mysterious disappearance of Will Byers after supernatural entities were unleashed during an experiment at Hawkins National Laboratory.
Showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer explained to The Hollywood Reporter that while they were inspired by Montauk, practicality led them to film in Atlanta, Georgia, instead of Long Island. They aimed to keep the essence of the tale intact while acknowledging the challenges of shooting in certain locations.
Thrillist explored the supernatural connections behind “Stranger Things,” noting the theory that an incident involving Eleven and the Demogorgon may have triggered the events in the show. This theory was rooted in alleged experiments at Montauk in 1983, which led to the end of secret military projects involving children.
In “The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time,” Preston B. Nichols claimed that the character of Eleven was based on Duncan Cameron, a child with psychic powers. The story also alleged that a monster was unleashed from Cameron’s subconscious during an experiment, serving as the inspiration for the Demogorgon in “Stranger Things.”
The Camp Hero Air Force Station, the real-life location of the Montauk facility, was closed in 1981 and later reopened as Camp Hero State Park. The area remains off-limits to visitors as a reminder of its mysterious and controversial past.
“Stranger Things” Season 5 will be released in three parts, with the first episodes premiering on November 26, followed by additional episodes on December 25, and the series finale on December 31. Fans eagerly await the conclusion of this gripping and nostalgia-inducing series.
