Grammy-winning South African star Tyla has been named among Billboard’s 2024 Honour Roll artists, celebrated for achieving a No. 1 hit on the R&B, Rap, or Rhythmic charts.
The Billboard Honour Roll recognizes artists for their chart-topping success in the past year.
It’s part of Billboard’s tribute to R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players, highlighting those who have elevated the genre.
This year, R&B had a strong comeback, notably with Usher’s Super Bowl performance. Five exceptional artists, including Usher, Victoria Monet, Lucky Daye, and the late Luther Vandross, were honoured for shaping the future of R&B.
Among the honorees, Tyla received the Global Impact Award for her hit “Water.”
The song dominated the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, holding the top spot for an impressive 44 weeks.
“Water” also achieved success on various charts, peaking at No. 7 on the Hot 100, No. 6 on Pop Airplay, and topping the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop and Rhythmic Airplay charts.
Billboard praised “Water” for its genre-blending sound that resonated with diverse audiences worldwide.
“The 22-year-old released her self-titled debut album, which opened at No. 2 on the ‘Top R&B Albums’ chart,” Billboard wrote.
While receiving the award, Tyla showed gratitude, reflecting on her journey to the top.
She said, “I remember when everyone felt like this was so unattainable especially where I’m from and the fact I’m able to be here today and live out the dream that never felt real.
“It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to experience; I thank everybody, thank you to everyone who cares to learn about other cultures, another style of music, I truly appreciate”.
Tyla’s accomplishments solidified her as a trailblazer in Afrobeats and R&B, influencing the global music scene with her distinctive style.
