In a recent event marking Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day, Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, raised concerns about the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) still operating in Nigeria.
Despite efforts to dismantle FETO-linked networks globally, the group continues to pose a threat to national security, especially in the fields of education and healthcare. The Turkish government has taken over several schools and institutions previously controlled by FETO, which operates under the guise of humanitarian initiatives.
The organisation, founded by exiled Islamic cleric Fethullah Glen, denies involvement in the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. However, the Turkish government officially labels FETO as a terrorist organisation and has received support from various international bodies in this designation.
Poroy emphasised the need for vigilance and caution against FETO’s infiltration into political and bureaucratic institutions in host countries.
