Tragedy Strikes in Baxley: 86-Year-Old Woman Fatally Attacked by Neighbor’s Dogs

Tragedy struck in a quiet neighborhood in Baxley, Georgia when an 86-year-old grandmother, Maria Nunez, was fatally attacked by dogs allegedly owned by her neighbor, Misty Branch. The Appling County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on Popular Lane where Nunez’s body was discovered outside her home, showing signs of a vicious mauling. The incident occurred the day before her body was found, and investigators managed to identify and secure the two dogs responsible.

An updated press release from the ACSO revealed that Misty Branch was arrested in connection with Nunez’s death and charged with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter. This incident shed light on the lack of animal control in Appling County, a recurring issue that authorities are working to address. Unfortunately, Nunez did not survive the brutal attack, unlike another victim of a similar incident in 2024.

Maria Nunez, a beloved member of the community, was a midwife and co-founder of a family business in Baxley. Her obituary highlighted her legacy and the impact she had on her family and friends. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by uncontrolled animals in residential areas and the importance of proper regulations.

In a separate incident, a 2-year-old boy named Kaimir Jones lost his life to two Rottweiler dogs in Valdosta, Georgia. The child, under the care of an unlicensed daycare owner, wandered into the dogs’ enclosure and suffered a fatal attack. The owner, Stacy Wheeler Cobb, was charged with serious offenses, reflecting the grave consequences of negligence in handling animals.
