The New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck has had a whirlwind year, from starring in Amazon Prime Video’s Etoile to curating the Ballet Festival: Jerome Robbins at The Joyce, as well as bringing her acclaimed show, Turn It Out With Tiler Peck & Friends, back to New York City Center. Not to mention, she recently choreographed a new ballet for NYCB, performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and is currently captivating audiences with her Sugar Plum performances in the busy Nutcracker season. Amidst it all, Peck also tied the knot with fellow NYCB principal dancer Roman Mejia in June.
The multitasking dancer has also ventured into the world of publishing with her book, XO Ballerina Big Sis, inspired by her Instagram advice series during her recovery from a neck injury in 2019. Reflecting on the pressure young dancers face, Peck hopes her book will offer guidance to the next generation struggling with similar challenges.
Looking back on her early days before joining NYCB, Peck reminisces about her move from California to New York City at 14 to attend the School of American Ballet. Balancing academics and ballet, she fondly remembers the camaraderie with her peers in the dorms, creating a supportive environment away from home.
Peck’s teenage years in New York City were a mix of discipline and exploration, attending Professional Children’s School while immersing herself in the dance world. Despite the demands of dancing at a professional level, she found solace in the friendships she formed and the unique experiences shared with her fellow students.
While her peers might have been enjoying typical teenage activities, Peck’s focus was on pursuing her passion for dance. Inspired by the legendary Darci Kistler, Peck found her calling in ballet and embarked on a journey that would lead her to the New York City Ballet and beyond.
Reflecting on her intense teenage years as a budding ballerina, Peck acknowledges the sacrifices made but expresses gratitude for the opportunity to do what she loves every day. With a sense of fulfillment and purpose, she embraces the path that led her to where she is today.
In a world filled with young talents seeking guidance and inspiration, Tiler Peck’s story serves as a beacon of dedication and perseverance in pursuit of one’s dreams.
