The Unspoken Departure: Josh Freese’s Journey After Leaving the Foo Fighters

As Josh Freese reflects on his abrupt departure from the Foo Fighters, a cloud of mystery still hangs over the surprising breakup nearly a year later. Despite landing on his feet with tours alongside punk rock band The Vandals and a stint with Nine Inch Nails, the shock of being fired without explanation continues to linger for the seasoned drummer. In a recent issue of Modern Drummer, Freese shares his frustration with the media’s tendency to misconstrue his words, making him cautious about speaking out on the matter.

After joining the Foo Fighters in 2023 following the passing of founding member Taylor Hawkins, Freese found himself ousted from the band just two years later. Although he refrains from delving into his theories behind the sudden dismissal, he fondly remembers his time with the group. Amidst the disorienting aftermath, he acknowledges the kindness and generosity he experienced from his former bandmates, leaving him puzzled by the unexpected turn of events.

With an impressive resume that includes collaborations with the likes of Ahmet and Dweezil Zappa, DEVO, A Perfect Circle, and Guns N’ Roses, Freese’s talents have graced the stage with a range of iconic musicians. Following his departure from the Foo Fighters, he rejoined Nine Inch Nails as a touring drummer, filling the void left by Ilan Rubin, who had departed to join his former bandmates in the Foo Fighters.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his exit from the Foo Fighters, Freese maintains a sense of gratitude for the opportunities he’s had in his music career. As he navigates the aftermath of his departure and embarks on new musical ventures, the seasoned drummer remains resilient in the face of unexpected challenges—a testament to his enduring passion for music and unwavering dedication to his craft.
