The Trial of Mike Brady: Robert Reed’s Challenges on The Brady Bunch

In 1970, actor Robert Reed faced a humbling moment while filming an episode of the classic TV sitcom “The Brady Bunch.” Reed, who played patriarch Mike Brady in the show, was famously critical of the scripts, and one such incident occurred during the Season 1 episode titled “The Grass Is Always Greener,” which aired on March 13, 1970.

In this particular episode, Mike and Carol Brady, played by Florence Henderson, switch roles for a day. The Brady dad helps their daughters with a Girl Scouts cooking badge, while mom goes to baseball practice with their sons.

During filming, Reed reportedly had issues with creator Sherwood Schwartz’s direction for a scene where he was supposed to slip on an egg. According to co-star Barry Williams’ 1992 book “Growing Up Brady,” Reed took a serious fall during rehearsals after expressing his displeasure with the scene.

Actress Ann B. Davis, who portrayed housekeeper Alice, confirmed that Reed was vocal about his disdain for the scene, calling it “ridiculous” and “totally unbelievable.” Despite his objections, Reed ultimately performed the scene, only to slip and hit the floor hard.

Reed’s dissatisfaction with the show extended beyond on-camera incidents. He often sent lengthy letters to Schwartz outlining inaccuracies in the scripts. One such instance involved a scene where Reed was scripted to say the house smelled like “strawberry heaven” while his wife cook strawberries, a claim he fact-checked and found inaccurate.

In an interview with Retrocrush, Schwartz revealed the challenges he faced with Reed on set, stating that Reed believed he was above television, particularly sitcoms, due to his theater background. Despite these difficulties, Reed continued on the show until his character was ultimately written out of the series finale.

Reed’s experiences on “The Brady Bunch” serve as a reminder of the complexities and challenges of working in the entertainment industry, where creative differences and clashes of personality are not uncommon.
