Last week, Toke Makinwa announced her pregnancy and suddenly, everyone became a gynecologist, pregnancy expert, and moral police all in one.
Then not too long ago, Priscilla Ojo also got dragged into the same narrative. She couldn’t even enjoy her moment without people throwing in surrogacy conspiracies.
At what point did having a surrogate become a crime? Why do people feel the need to dismiss women’s choice of birth?
Urban women magazine spoke to six women on this recurring trend and here is what they had to say

For me, I think this is very disturbing. Why would someone share a good news of their pregnancy and the first thing that comes to mind is to question if the woman is carrying the baby or hired a surrogate. No congratulations ooo just back to back speculations. It’s a crazy world we live in.

This whole situation annoys me so much. First things first, Is it your business? Like how is it your problem how I choose to bear my child? I’d opt for surrogacy anytime any day, I don’t care about what anybody says.

I think quite a number of people are not informed about having a surrogate. I’d suggest they do some studying so they don’t keep embarrassing themselves in the internet. I’m happy Priscy shut their lies with pictures of her safe delivery and I know Toke too will deliver safely and shut the naysayers.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I didn’t let anyone online know because of things like these. I still had my fair share when I put to bed. People were concerned with either I went through a cesarean section or had a natural birth. The invasion of privacy and entitlement is something we need to curb. Like I’d always say leave women bodies alone, let them make their choices.

People often forget that pregnancy is literally 50-50, a life and death situation. If it’s not convenient and they decide to get a surrogate is it not better than risking both the mother and child’s lives. Please my babes, always put yourself first don’t let anyone make you feel less of a mother for opting for a surrogate. Congratulations to Priscy for a safe delivery and I wish Toke a safe delivery too.

Typing in all caps: SURROGACY IS NOT A SIN! I have seen some hot takes from over zealous religious people on this surrogacy issue. It makes no sense to me. I don’t understand the stigmatization of surrogacy. Women should not be stigmatized for having a surrogate. It should even be encouraged.
