The Resurgence of “Don’t Know Much”

The bright lights of fame don’t always shine on a song right away. Sometimes, a track needs a second chance with a new artist to truly take flight. In 1980, renowned songwriter Barry Mann released a track called “Don’t Know Much” that received moderate success on the charts. However, it wasn’t until Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville covered the song that it truly soared to new heights.

Mann’s heartfelt ballad, written in collaboration with his wife Cynthia Neil and Tom Snow, spoke of love as the only constant in a world of change and aging. Despite its initial release not making a huge impact on the music scene, other artists soon took notice. Bill Medley covered the track shortly after, entering the Billboard Hot 100 charts at No. 88. Bette Midler also released a rendition, titling it “All I Need to Know,” which landed at No. 77 on the charts.

Years later, in 1989, Ronstadt and Neville breathed new life into the song with their rendition. Billboard recognized it as one of the Greatest Love Song Duets to be released, praising the duo’s emotional connection. Ronstadt’s album “Cry Like a Rainstorm” showcased the revamped track, propelling it to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

The duet between Ronstadt and Neville garnered critical acclaim, earning them the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Although it was also nominated for Song of the Year, it ultimately lost to another heartfelt ballad. Critics applauded the pairing of Ronstadt and Neville’s distinct voices, creating a tender love duet that resonated with listeners.

As the years pass, some songs find their true calling in the hands of different artists. “Don’t Know Much” is a perfect example of a track that needed a second chance to truly shine. The emotional depth and connection brought forth by Ronstadt and Neville in their rendition solidified the song’s place as a powerful ballad that continues to touch hearts to this day.
