In 2025, the beaches in front of the historic Hotel del Coronado had to be closed for 129 days due to the high levels of fecal matter in the water. This closure, especially during peak summer months, was devastating for an economy reliant on tourism.
Even residents in the area are not immune to the effects of the pollution. The Coronado Shores condo community’s entertainment director shared that he frequently has to close his windows to block out the sewer-like odors emanating from the water.
High bacteria levels in the water have prompted warnings for beachgoers, indicating a risk of illness from exposure. The situation has escalated to the point that some are experiencing symptoms of exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas, such as respiratory issues, headaches, and stomach illnesses.
The root of the problem lies in the Tijuana River, which carries wastewater directly into the Pacific. The population boom in Tijuana has strained the town’s sewage resources, leading to a surge in pollution flowing into US waters.
Efforts are being made to address the crisis, including new agreements with Mexico and expansions to wastewater treatment plants. However, for Coronado residents and tourists alike, the improvements have come too late.
