The Other Side of the Wind

Once in a blue moon, a film defies the norm of the lengthy production process that usually spans a year and a half to three years. Orson Welles’ creation, The Other Side of the Wind, shatters expectations by taking a staggering 48 years from inception to release. The project, co-written, co-directed, and produced by the legendary American actor and filmmaker, finally saw the light of day in 2018. Featuring a star-studded cast including John Huston, Bob Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, and Oja Kodar, this long-awaited drama tells a captivating tale that has gained praise from critics worldwide.

Originally intended as Welles’ comeback after years living abroad, The Other Side of the Wind began filming in 1970, with sporadic shoots continuing until 1976. Despite the director’s continuous efforts to edit the film in the late 1970s and early 1980s, financial, legal, and political entanglements with investors delayed its completion. Tragically, Welles passed away in October 1985 at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy that many sought to honor by bringing his final masterpiece to the screen.

Fast forward to 2014, when the rights to the film were acquired by Royal Road. With the guidance of Bogdanovich and producer Frank Marshall, the project finally premiered at the esteemed Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018, before making its way to Netflix on November 2, 2018. Accompanying the release was a documentary shedding light on the arduous production journey titled They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, providing a deep dive into the complexities of Welles’ vision.

Delving into the narrative of The Other Side of the Wind, audiences are treated to the gripping story of Jake Hannaford (portrayed by Huston), a director striving to make his mark with a daring comeback film after a prolonged absence in Europe. Shot in a mockumentary style, the film captures the frenzied final day of shooting his avant-garde masterpiece, mirroring the tumultuous nature of the production itself.

Welles, known for his groundbreaking work across film, radio, and theatre, has solidified his place in cinematic history as one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. Rising to prominence in the 1930s and making waves in Hollywood throughout the 1940s and 1950s, his legacy endures through timeless creations like The Other Side of the Wind, now available exclusively for streaming on Netflix.
