The Mystery of Nancy Guthrie’s Impounded Car

More than a week ago, a new development in the Nancy Guthrie case caught the attention of the watching world: The Pima County Sheriff’s Department revealed that they were in the process of returning Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni’s blue Honda CR-V, which had been impounded earlier.

However, when reached out by Parade on Wednesday, March 11, a spokesperson from the sheriff’s department clarified that the car had not yet been returned and the process was still ongoing, with no set timeline in place.

In an exclusive interview with Parade, Bob Krygier, a former commander with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team, shed light on the reasons for the delay in returning the car.

According to Krygier, investigators need to ensure they cover all possibilities and maintain the integrity of any evidence that might be on or in the car. This caution stems from the need to meticulously explore every aspect of the case.

One burning question on many people’s minds is why the blue Honda CR-V was seized by the authorities. The timeline of events provided by the Pima County Sheriff Department indicated that Nancy, 84, was last seen in the vehicle before her disappearance, making it a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Krygier explained that investigators are likely collecting scientific evidence like fingerprints, DNA samples, and electronic data from the car to aid in the investigation. This meticulous data collection process can be time-consuming, as every piece of evidence is carefully analyzed.

Although the authorities have explicitly stated that the car will eventually be returned, there are still lingering questions as to why it has remained in custody for so long. Krygier highlighted the importance of maintaining chain of custody on important items in such investigations to ensure a solid case is built.

On a recent episode of Nancy Grace’s Crime Stories podcast, investigative reporter Dave Mack mentioned that the vehicle was at a mechanic shop in Tucson, further adding to the mystery surrounding its impoundment.

As new details continue to emerge in the Nancy Guthrie case, the return of Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni’s car remains a key point of interest in the ongoing investigation.
