“The Madison” Premiere Pays Tribute to Robert Redford

The premiere of Taylor Sheridan’s new show, “The Madison,” featured a special tribute to the late Robert Redford. The dedication to Redford, who passed away in September 2025 at the age of 89, appeared in the end credits of the first episode which aired on Paramount+ on Saturday, March 14. Although Redford was not directly involved with the series, Sheridan included the tribute as a nod to the influence Redford’s films had on both “The Madison” and Sheridan’s previous hit show, “Yellowstone.”

The impact of Redford’s work can be felt throughout “The Madison,” particularly in a scene where the Clyburn family watches “A River Runs Through It,” a film directed by the late star. Sheridan drew inspiration from Redford’s visual storytelling and use of landscapes in his own TV shows, emphasizing the importance of the land as a character in the narrative.

In an interview with TV Insider, executive producer and director Christina Alexandra Voros reflected on the tribute to Redford in the series. She praised Sheridan’s decision to honor Redford, stating that the tribute felt like the appropriate move given the show’s thematic connections to the world Redford introduced.

Beyond “The Madison,” Redford had a significant impact on Sheridan’s career. When pitching “Yellowstone” as a film, Sheridan faced resistance from HBO, who initially wanted Redford for the leading role. After convincing Redford to take on the role of John Dutton in “Yellowstone,” Sheridan secured the green light for the show, despite HBO’s initial preference for a “Robert Redford type.”

Despite Redford’s involvement in “Yellowstone,” the role ultimately went to Kevin Costner, who played John Dutton for five seasons on Paramount Network. Redford’s influence on Sheridan’s work continues to be felt, with “The Madison” serving as a tribute to the late actor’s legacy.

The first three episodes of “The Madison” are currently available for streaming on Paramount+, with the second part of the first season set to premiere on Saturday, March 21. Through Sheridan’s homage to Redford, “The Madison” pays tribute to the enduring impact of Redford’s films on contemporary storytelling.
