The Last Farewell: A Tribute to Lowell George by Little Feat’s Bill Payne

Little Feat’s Bill Payne penned a heartfelt tribute to his former bandmate Lowell George, reflecting on what would have been George’s 81st birthday. George, a founding member and primary guitarist of the American rock band, tragically passed away in 1979 at just 34 years old from a heart attack caused by an accidental heroin overdose after a concert in Washington, D.C.

Despite George’s untimely death, Little Feat persevered through lineup changes over the last 50 years. Currently embarking on their farewell tour, aptly titled “The Last Farewell Tour,” the band is celebrating their legacy and transitioning away from extensive touring. Payne, the only founding member who has remained with the group throughout the years, paid tribute to George on Instagram as they embarked on this momentous journey.

Reflecting on the road ahead, Payne shared a whimsical moment envisioning 81 candles illuminating a birthday cake, a nod to their departed bandmate. As the tour kicks off, the band carries George’s spirit with them, honoring his contributions to their sound and stage presence.

Formed in 1969 in Los Angeles, Little Feat experienced highs and lows throughout their career, releasing albums consistently in the 1970s before disbanding in the ’80s due to creative differences with George. Reuniting in 1987, they have since released 22 albums, with their latest offering, “Strike Up The Band,” released last year. The band’s current lineup includes Payne, Sam Clayton, Kenny Gradney, Fred Tackett, Scott Sharrard, and Tony Leone.

Despite the challenges George’s departure posed to the band, Payne maintains a sense of reverence for his former bandmate’s legacy. In a 2019 interview, he emphasized George’s enduring impact on Little Feat, acknowledging his talent as a songwriter and musician. For Payne, George’s presence remains palpable whenever the band takes the stage.

As Little Feat embarks on their final tour, fans will have the opportunity to celebrate not just the band’s music but also the lasting imprint George left on their sound. With each performance, Payne and the band pay homage to George’s artistry and influence, ensuring that his spirit lives on through their music.

The Last Farewell Tour commenced in Orlando, Florida, and will culminate in St. Charles, Illinois, on May 9. Tickets are available on Little Feat’s official website, offering fans a chance to partake in this poignant moment as the band bids farewell to the stage.

In Payne’s poignant tribute to George, he encapsulated the essence of their journey ahead, encapsulating the profound impact of their time together and the enduring legacy they continue to uphold. As Little Feat embarks on this final chapter, they carry with them the spirit of George, ensuring that his memory remains an integral part of their musical narrative.
