The Guest Star Legacy of “The Brady Bunch”

The presence of big-name guest stars on beloved sitcoms often contributes to vivid memories for viewers. The iconic TV series “The Brady Bunch,” which aired from 1969 to 1974 on ABC, featured a plethora of remarkable guest appearances, including football legend Joe Namath and Monkees singer Davy Jones. Despite the star-studded lineup, some of the young actors on the show were too inexperienced to fully grasp the significance of their co-stars.

In a recent interview with Newsday, Eve Plumb, known for her role as Jan Brady on the show, discussed her lack of recognition for guest star Imogene Coca, who played Jan’s eccentric great aunt in a 1972 episode. The now 67-year-old actress admitted that she was simply too young at the time to appreciate the legendary comedic actress’s presence. Similarly, when asked about iconic actor Jim Backus, known for his role as Mr. Howell on “Gilligan’s Island,” Plumb confessed to not recalling him due to her young age.

Plumb’s lack of awareness extended even to other popular TV shows of the time, as she admitted to not watching “Gilligan’s Island” but opting for “Mary Tyler Moore” instead. Despite her limited knowledge of the guest stars, Plumb’s portrayal of Jan Brady remains ingrained in the hearts of fans of “The Brady Bunch.”

The show also featured appearances from young stars such as Davy Jones and Desi Arnaz Jr., creating a buzz on set that rivaled even the biggest guest stars. In Maureen McCormick’s memoir “Here’s the Story,” she described the excitement surrounding Jones’s visit to the set, highlighting the impact of having a pop star of his caliber join the cast.

Not only did the show attract young stars, but it also drew in sports legends like Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Namath, NFL star Deacon Jones, and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale. According to Barry Williams’ book “Growing up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg,” Florence Henderson, who played matriarch Carol Brady, fondly recalled her interactions with Namath on set, showcasing a lighthearted moment with the football star.

Overall, the guest stars on “The Brady Bunch” left a lasting impression on both the cast and viewers, creating timeless memories that continue to resonate with fans today.
