From mailing rental DVDs to bidding on Warner Bros. for over $80 billion, Netflix has certainly come a long way. One of their first forays into the streaming world was with the groundbreaking show “Orange Is the New Black”, starring Taylor Schilling. The series, which also featured actor Jason Biggs as Schilling’s character’s husband, marked Netflix’s historic entry into TV production.
When Biggs first learned about the show, he recalls being initially surprised. “I remember when my agent called me to tell me that there was this show and that it was going to be on Netflix. I had already read about House of Cards… and so it wasn’t like that shocking, but I still had much more questions than anyone would have now,” he shared with Parade magazine. Despite initial skepticism about working with a “DVD company”, Biggs dove into the project, unaware of the impact it would have on the industry.
“I remember telling people about it, that I was doing a show for Netflix. [They were like], ‘So you’re doing a web series?’ I’m like, ‘Yes, but we’re shooting it like it’s a real TV show,'” Biggs reminisced. The unconventional release of all episodes at once also set the show apart, transforming it into a 13-hour movie viewing experience.
In addition to his acting endeavors, Biggs has now ventured into directing. His latest project, “Untitled Home Invasion Romance”, is set to premiere digitally on Jan. 27. As he continues to explore new creative roles, Biggs reflects on the early days of Netflix and the impact they had on the entertainment landscape.
As we witness the evolution of streaming platforms and the changing landscape of television production, it’s clear that Netflix’s influence cannot be underestimated. With groundbreaking shows like “Orange Is the New Black” paving the way for a new era of TV consumption, the platform’s legacy continues to shape the way we watch and engage with media.
