The Diverse Flags of the Lesbian Community

The rainbow flag is the most commonly seen symbol of Pride, displayed proudly during Pride Month and outside the homes of queer individuals and allies. However, within the LGBTQ+ community, various groups have their own flags, including lesbians. The lesbian flag has a rich history and comes in several different styles, each with its own significance.

One of the most popular lesbian flags is the Orange-Pink Lesbian flag, featuring five vertical stripes in reddish-orange, paler orange, white, dark pinky purple, and dark magenta. This flag is a simplified version of the “Sunset” Lesbian flag, which has seven stripes representing different aspects of the lesbian community and identity.

Another prominent lesbian flag is the Labrys Lesbian flag, designed by graphic designer Sean Campbell in 1999. This flag features a deep purple background with an upside-down triangle and a white labrys in the center, symbolizing empowerment and inclusivity within the lesbian community. Purple has long been associated with lesbians, representing empowerment and identity.

Natalie McCray created the Lipstick Lesbian flag in 2010, aimed at representing femme-presenting lesbians. The flag features seven stripes in shades of pink and includes a lipstick print in the corner. While the term “lipstick lesbian” has a controversial history, the flag continues to be used within the community.

The most recent iteration of the lesbian flag is the Sunset Lesbian flag, created by Emily Gwen in 2018. This flag features seven stripes in various shades of oranges and pinks, each representing different aspects of the lesbian community. Since its debut, the Sunset Lesbian flag has been widely accepted for its progressive and inclusive design.

While there isn’t an official lesbian flag, these various flags are still used by different members of the community. Unfortunately, some flags, like the Labrys and Lipstick Lesbian flags, have been appropriated by exclusionary individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. The Sunset Lesbian flag remains one of the most widely accepted and inclusive flags for lesbians today.

In conclusion, the lesbian community continues to show resilience and creativity in the design and representation of their flags, each with its own unique history and meaning.
