The Afghan Whigs Tease Something Big for Nearly Four Decade Anniversary

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly four decades since the formation of the Afghan Whigs in Cincinnati. The band recently released two new singles, their first in three years, and teased that something big is in store for their upcoming anniversary.

As reported by Brooklyn Vegan, the Afghan Whigs are releasing a new 7″ featuring covers of “Fake Like” by Poliça and “Downtown” by Still Corners. Frontman Greg Dulli shared, “Both of these songs were born out of soundcheck jams. Each song holds a particular resonance for me and I really felt the lyrics, so they both flowed freely and felt good to sing.”

While the 7″ won’t be available until early 2026 on their own label, Shake It Records, it is currently available for preorder. In honor of their milestone anniversary, the band has plans in the works for the upcoming year that will surely excite fans.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Dulli reflected on the Afghan Whigs’ tradition of playing cover songs. He explained that covering songs was not always part of the plan but served as a way to warm up and create dialogue within the band. Dulli emphasized the importance of interpreting songs and finding a balance between covers and original music.

The Afghan Whigs have a long history of incorporating covers into their repertoire, with Dulli reminiscing about their early days playing songs like “Psychedelic Shack” by the Temptations. By experimenting with various styles and sounds, the band found inspiration for their own music, ultimately leading to their unique sound.

Fans of the Afghan Whigs can expect more exciting announcements in the new year, with hopes of new music and possible tour dates on the horizon. The band continues to evolve and push musical boundaries, solidifying their place in the music industry.
