A Texas mother is facing criminal charges for neglecting her 11-year-old son with autism. When police conducted a welfare check at their home, they found the boy malnourished, weighing only 46 pounds, and living in squalid conditions. Despite previous warnings from Child Protective Services, the mother refused to take her son to the hospital for treatment.
The mother, Rachel Nicole Blaylock, stands accused of injuring her son. The police officer who visited the home described it as infested with flies and smelling of feces. The son’s room was covered in fecal matter, and he was found with feces under his fingernails. His living conditions were deplorable, and his mother’s lack of action was alarming.
Paramedics eventually took the boy to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe autism and extensive dental decay due to neglect. There were also concerns about possible sexual abuse. Blaylock was arrested and taken to jail, but has since been released on bond. Her court date is set for November.
The grandmother of the boy criticized Blaylock’s parenting, saying she was not a good mother. She recounted instances where Blaylock would tell her son to “shut up” and made him sleep in a room with only a mattress. Blaylock and her boyfriend were also accused of using the boy’s food stamps for themselves.
