Rising teenage fencing star, Peluola Akinbamiro has also joined the growing list of athletes from different facets of the sports world who are representing Nigeria rather than their country of birth when she made the decision to compete for Nigeria in International competitions. The 13-year-old, who lives in the United States and trains at the Fort Bend Fencing Academy in Houston, said she was immensely proud of her Nigerian heritage and wanted to wear the national colors on the world stage.
Love for Fencing and Representing the Country
Akinbamiro fell in love with fencing after watching World Cup, among other high-profile competitions. The sport has taught her patience and self-discipline which she in turn credits for her ambition to compete at the top level. Through tireless effort and with tremendous family support, she continues to excel, both as an athlete and academically, driving achievement in the sport of fencing.
A Lift for Nigerian Fencing
Her choice to compete for Nigeria is a repeat of what fencer Folayemi Akinyosoye did in competing for Great Britain before converting to representing Nigeria. President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, is excited that Akinbamiro is part of the initiative, saying her presence should inspire the expanding fencIng community.
With Nigeria playing host to the African Championships this year and the Commonwealth Championships next year, the federation is determined to nurture talent that could hold its own on the world stage. With an eye on the future Olympic Games in 2028 and 2032, Akinbamiro is considered a critical building-block for Nigeria's prospects in the sport.
As Akinbamiro sets off on her global journey, hope is on that she not only paves the way for Nigeria’s growing reputation in fencing but will also motivate a greater number of young athletes to take up the sport.
