Snowstorm Warning Across Midwest and Pacific Northwest In March 2026

As spring begins to arrive in many parts of the U.S., bringing warmer temperatures and blooming flowers, there are still some regions dealing with lingering winter weather. Despite the changing of seasons, areas in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest are currently under warnings and alerts due to an approaching snowstorm that is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the region. Residents are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel as slick conditions are anticipated.

The National Weather Service issued an alert in the early hours of March 12, 2026 due to an intense storm system forming over the northern High Plains. This system is rapidly intensifying and moving towards the Great Lakes, bringing with it a significant amount of snow and high winds. States in the affected area include Michigan, Washington, Montana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Idaho. Officials are warning travelers to prepare for delays and exercise caution when traveling.

In Michigan, varying amounts of snowfall are expected across different counties. Northern Houghton and Kweenaw could see between 8 to 17 inches of snow, while southern Schoolcraft, Alger, Delta, and Luce may receive around a foot of snow with strong wind gusts. Other areas like Menominee and Dickinson are forecasted to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow.

Washington state will also experience varying amounts of snow due to differing elevations. Northern King Counties, the Cascades of Snohomish, and the Olympics could see up to 3 feet of snow along with high winds creating blizzard conditions. Lookout Pass, Stevens Pass, and Holden Village are expected to receive between 1 and 3 feet of snow.

Montana residents are bracing for significant snowfall, with areas like the Continental Divide potentially receiving 1 to 3 feet of snow accompanied by strong winds. Travel conditions may become treacherous and life-threatening in some areas. Lower elevations will also see snow and wind, albeit at lower levels compared to higher elevations.

In Wisconsin, snow accumulation is expected to be around 8 inches in northern areas like Marinette, Prince, Forest, Menominee, Vilas, Langlade, Oneida, and Lincoln. Minnesota and Idaho are also anticipated to receive snowfall, although the amounts vary depending on the location. Residents are advised to prepare for the winter weather conditions and exercise caution during this time.
