Simone Biles, Suni Lee, and others rallied behind their US gymnastics teammate Jordan Chiles after the unfortunate score reversal incident.
Lee expressed her dismay for Jordan on Instagram, emphasizing the judges’ role, while Biles shared a heartfelt photo with Chiles, affirming her as an Olympic champion.
“All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?? Completely unacceptable. This is awful and I’m gutted for Jordan,” Lee, 21, wrote on her Instagram Story Saturday.
“I got your back forever Jo. [You] have all my flowers and you will ALWAYS be an Olympic champion”.
LeBron James, fresh from his third gold medal win, also extended his support to Chiles.
Jade Carey stood up for her teammate, emphasizing that Chiles shouldn’t face consequences “for someone else’s mistake.”
Carey praised Chiles as “forever an Olympic champion” with much to be proud of. In the gymnastics floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Ana Bărbosu initially believed she secured the bronze medal with a score of 13.700.
Chiles’ score of 13.666 was challenged by her coaches, resulting in a higher overall score of 13.766 and securing her third place behind Andrade and Biles.
Chiles was then given the bronze medal, creating history alongside Biles and Andrade as the first all-Black Olympics gymnastics podium.
However, the IOC later reassigned the bronze to Bărbosu following an appeal, citing a late score inquiry.
The FIG confirmed it would honor the court’s decision, moving the Romanian athlete to third place.
In response, Chiles shared on Instagram her decision to take a break from social media for her mental well-being. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee expressed intentions to challenge the ruling.
“We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed,” the statement read.
