The Academic Staff Union representing university lecturers in Nigeria is opposing the bill aimed at preventing sexual harassment in universities. According to ASUU, the law unduly targets and stigmatizes university lecturers.
The bill suggests a 5-year jail term for lecturers found guilty of sexually harassing students and was introduced following the investigation done by BBC Africa Eye which exposed sexual misconduct by lecturers at top universities in West Africa.
The lecturers exposed in the investigation from the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos have since been suspended.
