Selena Gomez has opened up about feeling “a tad bitter” when discussions about her weight arise, noting that such comments are often directed at women, while “no one cares about these things with men.”
The 32 year old appeared with her fiancé, Benny Blanco, 37, on the March 24 episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shettypodcast, where they discussed body image.
Gomez explained, “It’s no secret that women tend to have more intense feelings about their appearance.”
She continued, “When I get ready for an event, 90 percent of the time, I’m just like, ‘I hope I can take the picture and sit down.’”
Though Gomez tries to avoid reading internet comments, she admitted, “So many things pop up in front of my face that I can’t help but see… I fall victim to looking at things.”
She also shared, “It’s not just about my weight, it’s about how I’m judged for being not white enough or not Mexican enough… no one cares about those things with men.”
The star added, “My weight is a big one too. Everyone has something to say, and it really makes me sad. Not even sad—I’m not a victim—I just think it’s made me a bit bitter, and I feel guilty for saying that, but it’s true.”
Gomez has previously shared that the medication she takes for lupus, a chronic autoimmune disorder, can cause fluctuations in her weight.
“I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe they’re what help me,” she said. “I’m not a model, and I’ll never be one. And I think models are awesome, but that’s just not me.”
She also revealed that she doesn’t have social media on her phone right now, telling Shetty, “I’m human, and sometimes I read things. But I do, most of the time, ignore it. I don’t have anything on my phone at the moment, so there are ways to combat it.”
