Transitioning from Derek Lashawn Kennedy to Sean Freeman, the actor explained that he wanted a name that resonated with his dream. “One that reflects the kind of mission I’m on,” Freeman shared, “A new version of myself, but keeping my middle name, Lashawn, I just shortened and remixed it to Sean, a name that signifies that God is gracious.”
Delving into the significance of his chosen last name, Freeman emphasized its historical and personal weight. “I chose the surname Freeman because it was inspired by the stories of my ancestors, the enslaved,” he revealed. “Many of whom decided to make a mark with their new identity by dropping their masters’ surname and choosing for themselves the name Freeman.” As he proudly declared, “When I say my name, it translates to because God has been gracious with me, I’m a Freeman, and that is the name that I go by.”
